Project Update - June 2022

We are pleased to advise that our grant application for $700,000 under the Places to Swim Grant from the NSW Government has been successful.

The tenders have been assessed and the construction contract has been awarded. Construction has been delayed due to the impacts the recent wet weather has had on the supply of the timber piles for the project. Construction is now due to commence early July 2022 with completion expected by September 2022.

Project Update - March 2022

On Sunday, 27 February we held a community clean-up of the Bayview Park foreshore to prepare for the construction of the swim site. The very low tide allowed us to collect bricks and other historical debris usually covered by water.

Tenders for the for the construction of the swim enclosure, accessible pathway, and outdoor shower are now closed. We are finalising our assessment of our preferred contractor to construct this exciting new feature at Bayview Park! Construction of the swim enclosure is expected to commence May 2022.

The Development Application for this project was approved in September 2021 and Council has also applied for a grant as part of the Department of Primary Industries and Environment Places to Swim funding program to assist project delivery.

Project Details

We are planning to re-establish a swim site at Bayview Park after the previous swim site was closed in 1969. After the Bayview Baths first closed in 1969, the baths were demolished in about 1995. They appear to have been built in the late 1950s, replacing an earlier trapezoidal enclosure. You can see more historical images of the swim site below.

In partnership with the Parramatta River Catchment Group (PRCG), we are working to make Parramatta River swimmable again, and this swim site will enable our community to enjoy and experience swimming in a safe environment.

A swimming safety net will allow people to swim in a safe environment. We are also planning to install an outdoor shower.

With Sydney Water, we have been assessing the site and testing the water quality. These tests are ongoing and updates will be provided on this page. For more information, you can review the site feasibility study in the document library and here.

Project Tutorial

What exactly is being delivered?

The project is proposing:

  • A swimming safety net set away from the jetty
  • An outdoor shower

How you can give feedback:

The below survey is seeking your input on the proposal, what issues or concerns you have, how likely you would be to use the swimming area once it is installed, and what Council could do to increase the likelihood of swimming.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we aren't able to host a drop-in on site, however we held a virtual drop-in session on Wednesday 16 September 2020 from 6-7PM with the project team.

How we will keep the community updated?

Throughout this project, we will keep the community informed, will listen to and acknowledge concerns and aspirations and provide feedback on how public input influenced our decisions moving forward.
