Basketball hoop - update

20 March 2023

Thank you to all those who provided feedback regarding the proposal for a Basketball hoop in Ferry Lane adjacent to Alexandra Reserve, Drummoyne.

Council has assessed all the feedback and would like to advise that due to safety issues and increased noise that would affect the residents close to the Reserve, the proposal is not supported, and a hoop will not be installed.

Council’s Road safety and traffic team assessed the location with the following observations:

  • The high likelihood of errant balls going onto Ferry Lane, someone chasing after a ball and the potential for a collision with through traffic is an unacceptable risk.
  • The constrained nature of Ferry Lane restricts drivers’ ability to observe people near the roadway and take evasive action.
  • The cul-de-sac like space services a private driveway and associated vehicle turning manoeuvres pose a risk to pedestrians. It is not feasible to install fencing to manage errant balls.

Council is looking at an alternative site in South Street Drummoyne where several small hoops have been installed between St Mark’s Catholic Primary school and Drummoyne Public school. The potential to replace one hoop with a full-size hoop is being evaluated.

In addition, as part of the review of the Drummoyne Oval Precinct Plan of Management, the needs of basketball facilities for the community is being considered. You can provide feedback and get involved with this project at: https://collaborate.canadabay.nsw.gov.au/drummoyne...
