New mural revealed under Bennelong Bridge

1 July 2024

Mullet Festival by Madwings is an acknowledgement of the Wangal people and a gathering that has taken place on the Parramatta river for thousands of years. The river was once an important food source for Aboriginal people and the festival marks the start of the season when thousands of mullet, known as 'Wurridjal', enter the river for their pre-spawning migration along the east coast of Australia. This celebration of food, dance, song and tradition would bring neighbouring clans together for trading and sharing.

This artwork tells the story of the historic gathering and reflects the diverse multicultural community who share and gather on the river today.

The artwork was commissioned by City of Canada Bay and funded by NSW Government as part of the Under the Bridges in Rhodes project.
