Permit Parking Schemes are subject to mandatory guidelines provided by Transport for NSW. These guidelines are designed around low to medium density dwellings that have little to no off-street parking. As the majority of residences near the Majors Bay Shopping Precinct have off-street parking, the area would not meet these guidelines and is not be eligible for a Parking Permit Scheme at this time.

Under the relevant standards and best practices, disabled parking spaces require the provision of a 'shared area' to be directly attached to the space. This means new disabled parking spaces are installed at the expense of at least 2 on-street parking spaces, further reducing the already limited supply.

With the recent changes, there will be a total of 9 disabled spaces within the precinct. In addition, vehicles displaying a valid disability permit have special parking concessions granted to them. For more information, please click here.

The parking study showed that parking demand extends into many of the surrounding streets around Majors Bay Road. The intent was to provide longer term parking in these side streets as a means of encouraging vehicles to park further away to enjoy the longer restrictions.

As part of the Majors Bay Road Parking Study, the consultant was tasked with investigating the feasibility of converting Brewer Street Carpark into a multi-storey carpark. The assessment considered the financial implications and did not consider the conversion an effective one.

Disregarding the financial concerns, there are a number of legal and design constraints on this area, most notably that it provides access to 103 Majors Bay Road. Council will continue to investigate opportunities to redevelop this area in the future.

There is a small section of parking on the eastern side of Majors Bay Road between Little Cormiston Avenue and Concord Post Office that remains unrestricted. These spaces primarily serve a number of properties that have limited off-street parking facilities who would be disadvantaged by a restriction being implemented. Noting that the requirement for a Parking Permit Scheme is unlikely to be met, Council will not be implementing any restrictions in this area at this stage.

This location was previously a bus zone and under the Road Rules, a vehicle is not to be parked within 20m on approach and 10m on departure unless otherwise signposted. Council had been advised that this location is now only utilised by the Bridj On-Demand bus service and as such, would make an ideal location for quick drop off and pick up manoeuvres.

Feedback gathered suggested that Council should consider timed parking in this area. However, this area needs to be kept clear for the bus to be able to properly align itself. Council will consider adjustments to the timed operation of this area in order to allow parking outside of the operational hours.

Council has the complex task of managing parking restrictions along Majors Bay Road to service a wide variety of users. With the diverse range of shops in the precinct, users can range from those quickly picking up a coffee to those staying longer for a meal, hair or doctor's appointment.

The aim of these changes is to provide a balance of restrictions to better cater for the many reasons people visit the precinct.
