Project Updates

Project background

After multiple rounds of consultation with the community, Council adopted the Majors Bay Reserve Passive Recreation Precinct Masterplan in September 2022. A feature of the adopted Masterplan is a proposed foreshore boardwalk at Majors Bay Reserve which will provide a space for the community to enjoy the water views and connect with nature. This $700,000 project is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with the City of Canada Bay. A number of upgrade and improvement works are currently being carried out in the reserve as part of the Masterplan, and a viewing deck would complement the expanded recreational facilities being created in the area.

We asked for your feedback on the draft concept plan for the foreshore boardwalk from 31 January - 3 March 2024. Take a look at the consultation report to see a summary of feedback received.

What is proposed?

Council is proposing to construct a viewing deck as Stage One of an over-water boardwalk adjacent to Majors Bay Reserve. The boardwalk would function as a standalone structure with the potential to be extended and added to in the future, once additional funding becomes available. This will ultimately create a continuous, over-water pedestrian and cycling foreshore link between Majors Bay Reserve and Shadrack Shaw Reserve.

Features of the proposed boardwalk include:

  • A four-metre-wide structure suitable for pedestrians and bicycles
  • Seating
  • Interpretive signage.

The proposed boardwalk has been located to minimise removal of mangroves. An Environmental Impact Assessment of the existing vegetation and the proposed boardwalk is currently being carried out and will be considered before the design is finalised.
