This project is identified in the Majors Bay Reserve Recreation Precinct Masterplan which was adopted by Council in September 2022. It's also part of our Foreshore Access Strategy.

The purpose of the boardwalk is to provide a viewing deck with seating where the community can enjoy the water views and connect with nature.

There is an opportunity to increase the length of the boardwalk in the future as funding becomes available. This will allow for the creation of a continuous over-water pedestrian and cycle link between Majors Bay Reserve and Shadrack Shaw Reserve to increase active transport and recreation opportunities.

Council has received $350,000 in funding from the NSW Department of Planning and Environment's Metropolitan Greenspace Program and Council is providing a matched amount of $350,000 to deliver the first stage of this project. The first stage involves constructing a viewing deck which can be extended and added to in the future, pending funding opportunities.

The construction of a boardwalk in Majors Bay Reserve is included in the Majors Bay Reserve Recreation Precinct Masterplan that was adopted by Council in September 2022 following three rounds of consultation with the community.

Community feedback on the proposed boardwalk was generally supportive, with some feedback suggesting the boardwalk be extended out beyond the mangroves. This feedback has been incorporated into the draft concept plan which we are now seeking feedback on.

The community also raised concerns about the environmental impact of the boardwalk construction. An Environmental Impact Assessment of the existing vegetation and the proposed boardwalk is currently being carried out and will be considered before the design is finalised.

The boardwalk will be built to accessible grades and will have handrails to aid those with limited mobility.

The boardwalk has been located to minimise the removal of mangroves, however, some mangroves will need to be removed.

An Environmental Impact Assessment of the existing vegetation and the proposed boardwalk is currently being carried out and will be considered before the design is finalised.

The Edwin Street and Northcote Street viewing platforms have both reached the end of their serviceable lives. Council will be removing these structures in 2024 to allow mangroves to revegetate the areas.

Construction of stage one works are anticipated to start in mid-2024 and be completed by the end of 2024.

Currently Council has funding to construct stage one of the foreshore boardwalk. Once funding becomes available in the future the boardwalk may be extended in a staged process.
