About the shared path

Council is proposing to create a 3.6m shared pedestrian and bike path around part of Five Dock Park, to accommodate people walking and riding. This path forms part of the Concord to the Bay Run project, connecting bike riders of all abilities between Concord and Henley Marine Drive.

To facilitate the shared path, we're also proposing to construct a 1.5m wide footpath along Barnstaple Road, in front of Five Dock Bowling Club. The proposed shared path will connect to this footpath and continue down Ingham Avenue.

To make it safer for pedestrians and bike riders, other proposed changes include:

  • Median refuge islands to be constructed on Barnstaple Road at Betts Ave and on Ingham Avenue at Noble Street for pedestrians and bike riders to safely cross
    • Median refuge islands would be 3m wide to ensure bikes can safely stop
    • Would require the removal of approximately 16 parking spaces which would be offset by the addition of 19 parking spaces next to Five Dock Bowling Club. Learn more here.
  • Pram ramps to be constructed on the corner of Barnstaple Road and Betts Avenue to join the shared path and make it easier for people to cross the road
  • Bike stencils to be painted on Barnstaple Road to alert drivers to the shared environment
  • 3 speed cushions to be constructed on Barnstaple Road to slow down drivers
    • This will not impact parking
  • 6 bike loops to be installed for 12 bikes to be left locked up
  • At each end of the shared path, bike riders will move onto the road to continue along Barnstaple Road and Noble Street

We asked for community feedback on these draft plans from 4 November - 8 December 2024.
