In 2020, we consulted with the community regarding a proposed East-West Regional Cycleway. The cycleway includes enhancing the connection between Barnstaple Road and Henry Street, across Great North Road, as well as enhancing pedestrian safety.

In mid-2021, we updated the community on the start of works on some parts of the route, while further design work was still underway on other parts, including where the route passes across Great North Road.

The existing pedestrian crossing on Great North Road is proposed to be upgraded to a pedestrian and cycling crossing. The proposed crossing is designed to assist pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road at this location, as well as enhance overall safety.

As outlined in the below plans, both Henry Street and Barnstaple Road are proposed to be raised at their intersections with Great North Road. These facilities will give cyclists and pedestrians priority over vehicles. The existing ‘No Stopping’ restrictions on Barnstaple Road and Henry Street need to be extended slightly to improve the sightlines at the intersections.

We are currently working on finalising the detailed designs and anticipate that construction will commence in mid-2023. Before the commencement of construction, Council’s contractor will distribute a further notification with additional information on how they will be managing the works.
