In mid-2020 we consulted with the community regarding a proposed East-West Regional Cycleway. Construction of some parts of this route started in June 2021, while further investigation and design work was still underway on other parts.

The route the Cycleway takes through Five Dock Park has been reviewed as part of these further investigations. We are proposing that the Cycleway be routed away from the playground and fitness equipment, improving safety for all park users.

As part of a separate project, we are also investigating expanding the angled parking along Barnstaple Road adjacent to Five Dock Park. These additional car spaces would help reduce parking demand in the surrounding residential area.

Project updates

Project Update - May 2022

In March/April 2022 we asked for the community’s feedback on proposed Angled Parking on Barnstaple Road. It was combined with the East West Regional Route at Five Dock Park for the purpose of consultation as the projects directly adjoined each other.

Through this consultation, we heard from residents both in support of and in opposition to the proposed expansion of angled parking along Barnstaple Road. Additional details on the community consultation process is included in Community Consultation Report which can be downloaded here.

Concept Plans - April 2022 - Under Further Review

Barnstaple Road: Angled Parking Expansion

Proposed expansion of angled parking

We are proposing to create additional angled parking spaces along Barnstaple Road, Five Dock. The proposed work will involve:

  • The creation of 35 new angled parking spaces
  • The removal of 17 existing parallel parking spaces to create the new angled spaces
  • The relocation of four small trees slightly further away from Barnstaple Road to accommodate the angled parking
  • Restricting the new angled parking spaces to front to kerb and vehicles under 6m only.

Proposed reconfiguration of existing angled parking

Several existing angled parking spaces along Barnstaple Road do not meet current standards due to the location of trees and utility infrastructure. As a result, it is proposed to reconfigure these spaces. The proposed work will involve:

  • The reconfiguration of existing angled parking spaces to create 25 angled parking spaces including one mobility parking space, 8 bicycle parking spaces and 3 motorbike parking spaces
  • Restricting the reconfigured angled car parking spaces to front to kerb and vehicles under 6m only.

New footpath

To improve pedestrian access, it is proposed to construct a new footpath along the south side of Barnstaple Road between Park Road and Five Dock Bowling Club.

Regional Cycleway Update

Shared Path through Five Dock Park

We are proposing a 3.6m wide shared path through Five Dock Park. We have reviewed the route the path takes through the park in consideration of previous community feedback and further investigations. The proposed work includes:

  • Minor route changes to avoid the playground and fitness equipment and to minimise the impact on existing trees
  • The removal of disused bocce courts
  • The removal of ten trees, offset by planting ten new trees at appropriate locations.

Bicycle Turning Bay on Barnstaple Road

We are proposing a right turn bay for cyclists on Barnstaple Road to provide access into Five Dock Park. This proposal is consistent with what we previously outlined to the community.

The proposed work includes:

  • A speed hump to manage vehicle speeds
  • The removal of four parallel parking spaces, offset by a separate proposal to increase angled parking along Barnstaple Road.

Refuge Island on Ingham Avenue

Construction will start soon on a new pedestrian and cyclist refuge island on Ingham Avenue near Howley Street. Residents in the immediate surrounds will receive a further notification on these works before they start.
