Project Update - June 2023

7 June 2023

The McIlwaine Park Upgrade has reached a significant milestone with the removal of the temporary sheet pile coffer dam, which enabled the new seawall to be constructed in a dry workspace. The seawall is now 90 per cent complete and we are excited to see the rockpool habitat area finished.

The new seawall incorporates honey-comb shaped structures known as living seawall tiles to attract and support different types of sea creatures and aquatic plants.

Scientific research in Sydney Harbour has shown that after one to two years, living seawalls already support at least 36 per cent more species than plain, unmodified seawalls with as many as 85 species of invertebrates, seaweeds and fish living and growing on the panels.

Other works completed to date include

  • First section of shared pathway including timber boardwalk
  • Planting of 11 new trees
  • Turfing and garden planting.

The project which is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with the City of Canada Bay is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
