Project background
The City of Canada Bay is developing a Street Tree Masterplan which will define how Council manages public street trees. We need your help to put this plan together to ensure we deliver an urban forest that provides maximum benefits for our community.
What is a Street Tree Masterplan?
A Street Tree Masterplan provides a strategic framework to help Council plant the right trees in the right locations. It will establish clear guidelines for tree selection, planting, and long-term management of public street trees. The plan will also identify priority planting areas to mitigate urban heat, improve shade and comfort for the community, and contribute to a more climate-resilient city.
Why are street trees important?
Tree planting in the Canada Bay area has a long history, some of our street trees are over 100 years old. Street trees are vital components of our urban environments, serving as the frontline of defense against urban heat and climate change. Street trees provide a multitude of ecosystem benefits, including:
- Providing shade and cooling, which can reduce energy consumption costs
- Contributing to biodiversity by providing habitats for fauna
- Promoting mental well-being and community cohesion
- Adding aesthetic value to the area
