A Magpie's Journey
Church Street
Formosa Street
Artworks commissioned by the City of Canada Bay.
Artist Statement
The artworks on the Street Libraries in Church Street and Formosa Street Shared Spaces tells the story of a magpie on a quest — searching for something unknown. Driven by instinct, he searches until he discovers what he’s been seeking all along: love. In a symbolic act, he plucks a heart from a fence and takes flight, carrying his newfound purpose.
His flight leads him to Formosa Street, where he releases the heart — a gesture that begins a new chapter. There, he finds his mate, and together they begin to build a life together, growing a family, transforming the magpie’s solitary search into a shared journey of connection, creation, and belonging.
The City of Canada Bay is a local government area in Sydney. We acknowledge the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, in particular the Wangal people of the Eora nation, as the first inhabitants of the nation and the traditional custodians of the lands where we live, learn and work.
