1. Provide shading to the existing amphitheatre steps
2. Improve the usability of the existing space by providing an informal meeting and performance space
3. Deliver the project within the given budget
4. Deliver the project within the given time frame
5. Create a structure that does not impede the existing cycleway or walkway.

The Rhodes amphitheatre shade structure project aims to benefit the community by improving the usability of The Connection. The project will promote gatherings and create a performance space that can be utilised under various weather conditions. The upgraded amphitheatre space will improve the usage of community facilities, create further community connection and improve public health and safety.

The project aims to support the strategic goals of the City of Canada Bay to enhance and improve our community spaces.

This $650,000 project is funded by the City of Canada Bay through Development Contributions received under the Section 7.11 - Renewing Rhodes Contributions Framework (RRCF).

The project is being delivered over the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 Capital Works programs as part of the Major Projects portfolio.

The shade structure has been architecturally designed to accentuate the Rhodes vistas.

The key principles guiding materials and finishes selection are as follows:

1. Be of a similar language to The Connection
2. Allow for light within the space
3. Mitigate excess radiation of heat where possible.

The list below provides justification for materials and choice for the finishing:

• Structural elements
  Structural steel powder-coated in a matt finish allows for similar angular language to The Connection
• Roofing membrane
  Serge Ferrari 782 tensile shade fabric in sand colour provides a sense of openness and light while simultaneously blocking the sun
• Columns
  Structural steel located so as not to disrupt the flow of the site.

Construction will commence on Monday, 20 July 2020, with completion scheduled for Friday, 11 September 2020, weather permitting.

Construction will occur between the standard working hours of Monday to Friday 7am–5pm.

During the construction period temporary fencing will be established around the amphitheatre steps. The foreshore walkway will remain open to the public outside of the construction hours of Monday to Friday 7am–5pm as well as from Thursday, 30 July – Sunday, 16 August.

Diversions will be put in place during cycleway and walkway closure periods. Please refer to the attached diagram for a map of diversions and the constructiona area.

Access hours to The Learning Space and Bare Witness café will remain unchanged throughout the duration of the construction. The Meeting Space and The Event Space’s access hours will also remain unchanged, except for a short period in mid-August due to crane operations.
