The Mortlake Place Plan 2019-2025 has been adopted by Council and is being delivered already with such projects as the Tom Murphy Reserve and Wangal Reserve Upgrades already underway.

Mortlake is located on the foreshore of Majors Bay and the Parramatta River. It enjoys a beautiful foreshore environment complimented by a colourful shopping village and vibrant community.

The recent development of redundant light industrial sites and aging residential infrastructure has resulted in a significant change to the physical environment in the area and a new demographic mix has created a culturally diverse community in a medium density suburb.

We have prepared a draft Place Plan for Mortlake to respond to these changes. Consultation to develop the draft plan was undertaken between September 2018 and February 2019 and focused on developing an understanding of the aspirations, concerns, needs and values of the local community, businesses and other relevant stakeholders.

The intent of the plan is to create a place of:

  • Meaning and connection for residents, business owners and visitors
  • Attractive and inclusive public spaces
  • Engagement between Council, residents and businesses
  • Environmental social and cultural sustainability.

About the draft plan

The draft plan is a synthesis of local knowledge from a range of individuals, groups and key stakeholders including community members, businesses and local community organisations. The delivery of the Place Plan will require that same collaborative effort and partnerships across the stakeholders.

Council has listened to the community throughout our thorough consultation period, and has identified three key priorities for the plan:

Road Safety

  • Road safety education campaign to be hosted in Mortlake's centre
  • Safety signage installed
  • Improved lighting plan developed to support road safety

Foreshore access

  • City wide foreshore access plan to be completed

Activation

  • Evening activation opportunities mapped
  • Cultural programming to be developed and delivered in key parks and places in Mortlake

Previous community consultations for the place plan

September 2018 consultations

Onsite consultation dates and locations took place at:

  • Sunday, 9 September 2018 - Breakfast Point Spring Fair, Village Green, Village Drive from 10am - 2pm
  • Saturday, 22 September 2018 - Tennyson Road Shopping Village, Mortlake from 10am - 12pm
  • Saturday, 29 September 2018 - Tennyson Road Shopping Village, Mortlake from 10am - 12pm

Council then reviewed the input from the community and decided that further discussions with the community would be beneficial to the final draft of the Place Plan.

February 2019 consultations

A further phase of consultation on the Mortlake Place Plan was held in February to refine the priorities and vision that the community had indicated should be reflected in draft Place Plan.

These priorities and vision were developed from consultation undertaken in 2018.

The February 2019 consultations were held at:

  • Tom Murphy Park on Saturday 23 February 2019
  • The Community Rooms at the Breakfast Point Administration Building Monday 25 February 2019 between 11am – 2pm & Wednesday 27 February 2019 between 11am – 2pm.
