Nurturing Emerging Community Leaders

Are you interested in strengthening your role in community leadership and participation?

Join our free mentoring program to develop your skills in leadership, advocacy and community engagement so you can become a more effective leader in your neighbourhood.

The mentoring program aims to:

  • Strengthen the relationship between passionate individuals and Council.
  • Provide networking opportunities.
  • Unite our community in addressing local challenges and generating solutions based on mutual respect, inclusion and diversity.
  • Prepare you for a community leadership role.

This program also focuses on developing the skills and abilities of participants in advocacy, community engagement, leadership and civic participation. It has been designed to develop the knowledge and thinking of participants, while expanding their professional networks and creating community connections. Participants will have the opportunity to network and build relationships with each other, Council staff and representatives from community organisations.

The program will provide an inclusive, supportive and enabling learning environment for all.

What's involved?

Participants

As part of a mentoring program, participants will explore how to develop and apply leadership skills within their represented communities, gain practical skills and knowledge through a series of group workshops, and build networks and connections. Participants will work alongside a mentor, but workshops will be run in a group setting.

Mentors

Each participant is partnered with a mentor from Council or one of our project partner organisations. Mentors will support participants in their learning, and share a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise in different fields, while creating a safe and productive space for all participants.

Workshops

This program includes a number of workshops to be held weekly over four months. Workshops will develop skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Cultural awareness training and developing cross cultural competence.
  • Communication and intercultural communication.
  • Community capacity and Community Development Principles.
  • Social media and online tools to build and support community.
  • Collaboration, partnership and funding opportunities in the local area and beyond.
  • Leading change.
  • Event planning and event management.

Who should apply?

This program aims to represent the City of Canada Bay's diversity, and is open to people of all genders, abilities, cultures, linguistic backgrounds, sexual orientation, education and employment status.

Are you:

  • An active contributor to your local community and passionate about creating better outcomes within your community.
  • Able to commit to the full program.
  • An individual aged 16 years of age or older and living, learning or working in the City of Canada Bay.
