Community sharps are medical devices that penetrate the skin and are generated by community members to maintain their health. Community Sharps include:

  • Needles – used to give injections, draw blood or insert insulin pump tubing
  • Syringes – even if the needle is removed
  • Pen needles for insulin pens
  • Blood glucose or finger pricker lancets

  • In August 2022, an updated Community Sharps Policy was adopted by City of Canada Bay Council. The policy provides for a community sharps program which promotes the accessible, free, safe and easy disposal of community sharps through local pharmacies to reduce risk from sharps injuries when sharps are placed in the kerbside collection bins.

Council invited new and existing pharmacies to express an interest in participating in the program. All applicants are now being assessed against the criteria detailed in the policy. A full list of new participating pharmacies will be updated on Council's webpage in December 2022.
