Consultation update

Following concerns raised by residents and local businesses, Council will not be proceeding with the proposal of creating a shared space trial at Clermont Avenue.

As part of the consultation there was support for fairy lights in trees, public art, and a desire for outdoor seating and plants. Council's Place Team will work on these ideas and will investigate the installation of solar fairy lights.

Shared Space Consultation

In November 2021, the City of Canada Bay launched the Vibrant Villages Recovery Program to support our local businesses and community to bounce back from the impacts of COVID-19.

Since then, shared spaces have been established in Drummoyne, Concord and Wareemba, and have been successful in providing residents and businesses with active spaces for outdoor dining, games, and pop-up events in their local area.

Council has received a request from the Majors Bay Chamber of Commerce to propose a temporary shared space on Clermont Avenue at Concord Road to promote North Strathfield businesses and trial infrastructure improvements that would drive foot traffic and inject added liveliness to the precinct.

When initially consulting the community in 2021 about this area, Council received mixed feedback with overall support. As this was some time ago, we want to check in with you about a trial closure of the space. It could potentially be used for:

  • a coffee/gelato cart to complement the diverse food offerings of surrounding businesses
  • outdoor seating
  • pop up activations
  • games
  • as a place to meet.

A diagram of the proposed location can be found below, with some images of other trial shared spaces sites. The proposed trial period will be six months. The trial would only go ahead after an assessment of traffic impacts and subject to approvals.
